Obesity and diabetes increase risk of Covid-19 related complications. Bariatric surgeries for obesity and metabolic surgeries for type 2 diabetes reduce those risks. After surgeries even if anyone gets Covid-19 infection, it is either asymptomatic or usually mild and recovery chances are significantly high.
Several people are calling me and asking if they can undergo bariatric and metabolic surgeries if they got Covid-19 infection and recovered.
You can safely undergo bariatric and metabolic surgeries after recovering from Covid-19 infection but the waiting time depends on the severity of Corona infection, requirement for hospital or ICU admission.
Waiting time from the date of Covid-19 diagnosis to bariatric surgery –
4 weeks – For asymptomatic patients.
4 weeks – For mildly symptomatic patients with non respiratory symptoms.
6 weeks – For symptomatic patients who did not require hospitalization.
8 to 10 weeks – For symptomatic diabetic, immunocompromised, or hospitalized patients.
12 weeks – For patients admitted in ICU.
