Obesity and diabetes increase risk of COVID-19 related mortality and morbidity. Individuals with obesity who are infected with COVID-19 and require intensive care present challenges in patient management as it is more difficult to intubate these patients. It is observed that the individuals with obesity and diabetes are at significantly higher risk of complications if they acquire COVID-19.

On the other hand, bariatric and metabolic surgeries reduce risk of COVID-19 related morbidity and mortality. Individuals who underwent bariatric and metabolic surgeries are at significantly lower risk of complications if they acquire COVID-19. This is partly because these surgeries induce significant long-term weight loss and long lasting diabetes remission.
